Vicous Victor Ortiz is tagged as the underdog in his upcoming bout against Floyd Mayweather, the still-undefeated former number pound for pound fighter in the world and the two-time Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine. Mayweather has also been hailed by some people as one of the greatest boxers of all time and has beaten the likes of Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Shane Mosley. But the 24-year old boxer is not all that bothered about not being favored to win by several boxing pundits. In fact, it just motivates him to improve and train more to prove to other people that he should not be looked past. He and his team are not afraid to be pitted against Mayweather as they are not impressed with him. They think Pretty Boy is all but hype and overrated, all bark and no bite.
In an interview with Ortiz, the 24-year old south paw said, “Mayweather has never impressed me, ever since I was a kid. There’s been a lot of hype. He’s fought the right fight at the right time. Go off and turn off the sound. He’s nothing. Well, not nothing, but not as great as people think. I thought he lost to [Jose Luis] Castro. I thought Oscar was beating him, one-sided, until he stopped using the jab. I don’t know that it’s really a tough fight.”
Danny Garcia, the trainer of Ortiz, agrees on what his ward said regarding Mayweather. He commented that when Mayweather have fought against the so-called greats in boxing, they were already past their prime and that they were not in the perfect form back in the days of their reign. Garcia said, “He’s never fought anybody in his prime. Everybody’s either too old or too young.” Ortiz is ten years younger than Mayweather, and is said to be bigger and stronger than him.
On their upcoming game, Ortiz is slated to defend his WBC Welterweight championship belt against Mayweather. Their fight will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 17. Ortiz is going to prove his point and have the world realize that Mayweather isn’t all that.
